A Chapter of Adventures edition by G A George Alfred Henty Literature Fiction eBooks

I LOVE G.A. Henty's adventure books for boys (despite being a 20-something girl!) and adore his great attention to historic detail. Unfortunately this is not a good example of his best work. The story rambles--he tells rather than shows; there's a lot of "he did this, then he did that, then he thought about doing this." And there are really three plots, only one of which has a big enough conflict to efficiently move the narrative along.
[ALERT: Some spoilers!]In the first plot there is a young boy and his sister and widowed mother who live in a small fishing village. The story rambles on about their daily doings and only gets exciting when the boy and two of his friends nearly drown in a fast-approaching tide.
Then the story keeps rambling on until the boy is out in a larger boat with some older fishermen, and they get swept up in a storm and rescue a sailing vessel full of upper-class men and women, one of whom turns out to be extremely rich and as a reward for saving their lives, sends his little sister off to school, his mother to a richer village and himself as a crewer on a merchant ship.
Then suddenly the boy is in the Mediterranean, kidnapped in an Egyptian revolt with some friends and left to escape and wander around the Middle East for months. Once they finally find their way back to port and regain their vessel, the story ends.
Like I said, the story rambles and has no over-arching plot or momentum, and the characters are quite dry and difficult to connect with.
I'm surprised to be saying this, but this is a G.A. Henty book I could do without. Please read "For the Temple" instead!!

A Chapter of Adventures edition by G A George Alfred Henty Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I've been a big fan of Henty for several years now, and this is not one of his better books. While exciting at parts, it's mostly information about a boy's normal life. For those looking for a prime Henty, I advise In Freedom's Cause, or At Agincourt.

This book is a must read. One of Henty's most exciting and complex adventures, the story begins in the fishing village of Leigh. The over-arching theme of this book is that a young man learns the skills of leadership by doing, a common Henty theme. This one is very realistic as it, like life, doesn't follow straight lines.
[Spoilers]
In Leigh, the humble bawleys [fishing boats] on which young protagonist Jack Robson earns his keep, are left lying in the mud after the tide goes out like a "flock of broken-backed ducks". [see last paragraph].
Here Jack's ever-hopeful mother and his sister are saved from destitution by Jack's courage.
Chapter III, A Run From Harwich, makes sailing understandable to a landlubber in a way I've never experienced before.
Later, in Alexandria, the natives' irrational fear of Christianity leads to the destruction of 500 European shops and a fearsome revolt we know as the Anglo-Egyptian War. Jack, trapped in the center of the riot, has not one but two amazing escapes from intense violence and enslavement. Later, he watches the iron-sided British Fleet bombard Alexandria's forts and the 38th Regiment and 60th Rifles land. There are other side adventures in ravaged Alexandria that are quite riveting.
Soon after, Jack & friends are back on the Wild Wave where an interlude of fabulous sea tales are told by deckhand "Old Joe". His tales of icebergs and a drunken Captain attempting the Mozambique channel are each an adventure in itself.
Jack's ship the Wild Wave attempts to travel to India when a cyclone hits. A most thrilling struggle ensues. After the terrifying shipwreck, even their journey on foot to a Calcutta British stronghold is not easy. Jack ends the story as a second mate on one of Mr. Godstone's ships. It has been another Henty exhibition that hard work and unselfishness leads to promise for young men. The book is entirely based on real events and places.
THE BEST WAY TO ENVISION A HENTY is to make yourself a folder of pictures off the internet are about the topics Henty is talking and then slide show them as your desktop background. For this book, I have some amazing shots of sturdy bawleys in the modern city of Leigh in the mud against a setting sun, others at high tide, a shop advertising fish in Leigh, the mighty St Katharine's pier in London, paintings of the Anglo-Egyptian War, the murderous currents and treacherous islands of the Mozambique channel and even a sailor's original description of the difficulties of these places. These help me look at the same things Henty saw and the accuracy of Henty's writing makes the story jump out at you. Even after you finish the book, they bring back good memories.
